PILATES

Fully Equipped Studio

We are all unique and so is the way we learn. Individual instruction gives each person the time they need to connect to their body and learn how to move more efficiently. It is with these tools that you can truly see progression.

We aim to build strength from the inside out, so that we maintain our joint integrity and power. Good circulation, blood flow and nerve function comes when our body moves with ease, rather than using excess tension.

Working with the Pilates apparatus allows you to use the entire range of the Pilates repertoire to find the right program for you. Learning the concepts of movement allows you to progress through related exercises, moving from the fundamental, to the more complex coordinated movements.

STUDIO CLASSES

YOUR INITIAL SESSION

Before joining the semi-private classes, we need to do an initial consultation. This is for you and for your teacher to have a chance to really see you, and what you need. We discuss your background and goals, and get started learning some movement principles, and connecting you to your breath and core. You will already feel the difference in how you move after your first class.

CONTINUING SEMI-PRIVATES

Our semi-private classes have a maximum of 3 people each hour session. You get the individual attention and correction, but without the full cost of a private session. Each person works independently, so you can work on your needs and challenges.

PRIVATES

You might want a little bit of extra attention, be it that you have a specific injury that you need to rehabilitate and gain deeper awareness of, or maybe you need to push a little further if you are training for a sport or event.

A BRIEF HISTORY

Joseph Pilates and Contrology

The mass rise of Pilates in the last decade, has also led to a washing down of the original method and it's roots. I think it is important to acknowledge that 'Pilates' actually refers to Joseph Pilates and his Contrology method.
Joe Pilates was born near Dusseldorf, Germany in 1883. Like many children of the time, he suffered from many ailments, but overcame these ailments by dedicating himself to physical fitness and health. He practised gymnastics, boxing and self defense. During WW1, he was living in England, and so was interned in a camp with other German nationals throughout the war. It is here that he developed ideas for his exercise method and the Pilates matwork. After WW1, he returned to Germany and continued to train as a Boxer.
Around 1925, he immigrated to the USA, meeting his future partner, Clara, on the ship to America. They shared similar passions and ideas, and opened a gym together in New York. Joe called his exercise method, 'Contrology', the conscious control of the mind and body. It wasn't until after Joe died in 1967, that his method was called 'Pilates'. Joe developed and patented his unique equipment and apparatus, which were built by his brother, Fred Pilates. A lot of the pieces doubled as functional furniture for the NY City apartment.
Within the same building as Joe & Clara's Contrology studio, were many dance and art studios, and this eclectic group of artists, singers and dancers became clients. Dance innovators, George Balanchine and Martha Graham immigrated to NY around the same time as Joe, and many of their dancers became long term Pilates devotees. It was an era of emerging new ideas, and many would have been shared within these walls.
When Joe passed away, Clara asked Joe's protege, Romana Kryzanowska to take over the New York studio. Romana was a dancer for George Balanchine and had come to Joe when she was 16, to rehab an ankle injury. Many other first generation Pilates clients, mostly dancers, opened their own Contrology studio, and taught Joe's original work.
Martha Graham Company dancer, Ron Fletcher, opened a Contrology studio in Beverley Hills in the 70's, with many famous clients, such as Raquel Welch, Candice Bergen, Cher and Madonna. It was through these celebrities that the Pilates Method came to be more popularly known. Joe did always say that he was 50 years ahead of his time.
